My Imperial Bestiary: From Monkey to Fenghuang, C-Drama Stars in Animal Form

Introduction

After years of watching C-dramas, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: the bond that develops between fans and actors is rarely limited to a simple "I like this actor" or "how handsome this actor is."

When a star truly captivates us, we almost unconsciously begin to build a little personal universe around them, made up of nicknames, recurring jokes, characteristics only we notice, and seemingly insignificant details that, over time, become an integral part of how we perceive them. A facial expression, a particular way of smiling, a recurring gesture, the way they move in front of the camera, or perhaps the contrast between the characters they play and the personality that emerges behind the scenes: it is precisely these small, seemingly insignificant details that, over time, build the image we have of them and make them a loving presence in our imagination.

In my case, this process has reached a para-scientific level. At a certain point, I realized I spontaneously associated actors with animals, as if each had a dominant characteristic that immediately made me think of a particular beast. And once I started noticing, it became virtually impossible to stop. This is how my personal Imperial Bestiary of C-drama stars was born.

It's not a ranking of beauty, nor an absolute assessment of talent. An actor isn't associated with an animal simply because they're charming or popular: the classification arises from the sum of those small details that, in my eyes, build their "aura," from the way they occupy the screen to the impression they leave in their most spontaneous moments away from the set.

Not all the actors I admire automatically enter the Bestiary, and, above all, not all those who do receive the same type of zoological classification.

I love some too much to relegate them to the common species: a special category was needed for them. Others possess an image so iconic and unique that they elude any ordinary taxonomy, becoming legendary creatures that cannot be traced back to a simple animal.

This is my personal taxonomy. If, while reading, you think of an actor or actress who, in your opinion, deserves a zoological classification, please let me know via email or on my social media channels: the Bestiary is constantly expanding, and I welcome your suggestions!

Methodological Note: All scientific names used in this article are completely fictional. No Linnaeus was harmed in the classification of the species in the Bestiary.

The actors are listed in alphabetical order, with no correlation between their position and their level of personal appreciation.

The distinction between "Common Species" and "Protected Species" reflects exclusively my personal preference for certain actors and in no way implies a judgment on their abilities, appearance, popularity, or professional value. In other words: those declared Protected Species are so simply because, in my personal zoological ecosystem, they absolutely must be preserved from the risk of extinction.

The distinction between "Mythological Creatures" and other animals reflects my personal perception of the level of fame and aura surrounding each actor. Mythological Creatures are those stars who, in my eyes, have reached a level of fame or stage presence that makes them seem superior to the normal Bestiary fauna.

In no way, however, does this classification claim to be objective: it is a taxonomy that responds exclusively to the laws of my very personal ecosystem, which may not correspond, in whole or in part, to yours.

✨ Mythological Creatures

Dilraba Dilmurat 🐈‍⬛

✒️ Common Name: Divine Black Panther

📜 Scientific Name: Panthera pardus nocturna

🌏 Natural Habitat: wilderness, shady forests, and film sets that allow her to move elegantly while maintaining a certain aura of mystery. She's especially active during dim light hours, when she can go away from filming locations without attracting undue attention. However, she's extremely adaptable: when she encounters individuals with whom she feels safe, she can spontaneously approach and display surprisingly playful and sociable behavior.

🔍 Why the Black Panther?

The black panther is a creature of the shadows, elegant and silent, moving between light and darkness without belonging entirely to either. Her beauty is not the luminous one of the fenghuang: she's more mysterious, magnetic, and unsettling, capable of attracting the gaze precisely because she seems to hide something that cannot be fully understood. Dilraba may appear sophisticated and almost unattainable, but she can also be surprisingly friendly, spontaneous, and even funny. Her elegance does not erase her affability, just as the panther's predatory nature does not prevent it from being curious and playful: beneath her apparent coldness lies a lively personality, always retaining an aura of mystery. If the fenghuang carries with it a fragment of the sky, the black panther seems to guard a fragment of the night because with her beauty, she manages to make even the darkness fascinating.

📜 Scientific Name: Pengus altivolans

🌏 Natural Habitat: the highest altitudes in the sky, from which he patiently observes the chaos of human beings before deciding whether to intervene. He can also be spotted on stages, film sets, and anywhere where someone capable of demonstrating strong charisma and enviable resilience is needed.

🔍 Why the Peng?

Because no other animal could represent him. Liu Yuning became a legendary creature not by birthright, but because he rose beyond all expectations through perseverance, transformation, and ambition. It is precisely this journey that makes him similar to the Peng: in Chinese mythology, the Peng is a creature that symbolizes metamorphosis, the ability to abandon one's limitations and reach unimaginable heights. Liu Yuning built his ascent step by step, accumulating experiences and transforming difficulties into motivation. His appeal, therefore, comes not only from talent or stage presence, but from the charisma of a person who continues to grow, transform, and transcend the boundaries that seemed to define him. He is a legendary creature not because he is better than his colleagues, but because he has demonstrated the ability to put his skills to good use, becoming much greater than anyone initially imagined.

🌏 Natural Habitat: high places, cloud-shrouded mountains, and lush forests where sunlight filters through the trees. She prefers harmonious, bright environments and tends to congregate with other specimens on the sets of historical dramas. She is particularly attracted to wutong trees (梧桐), where she loves to perch, benevolently observing the production crew at work. She does not aggressively defend her habitat, as her very presence seems to naturally bring balance.

🔍 Why the Fenghuang?

The fenghuang is a creature of harmony and splendor, whose beauty arises from the balance of grace, strength, and virtue. Like the fenghuang, Yang Zi possesses a radiance that doesn't need to be flaunted to be noticed. Her presence is warm, elegant, and naturally magnetic, capable of shifting from lightness to solemnity without ever losing her charm or humanity. Alongside her radiance, Yang Zi also represents the fenghuang's ability to be reborn while retaining its essence: despite playing very different roles, she manages to assume a new form each time without erasing her identity. In short, Yang Zi is a fenghuang because she doesn't seem to simply belong to the world of men: she seems to carry within her a small fragment of the sky.

🌏 Natural Habitat: TV parlours, large gardens, and movie sets of any kind, as long as she has enough space to roam, explore, and cause mischief. She is a highly social creature, tending to seek the company of others and thriving in stimulating environments. She is particularly active when she finds someone willing to join her in her games, but she can alternate sudden bursts of energy with long periods spent seeking attention and cuddles.

🔍 Why the Yorkshire Terrier?

The Yorkshire Terrier is a dog with a delicate and refined appearance, yet possesses a surprising energy and personality for its size. Lively, curious, and playful, it can switch from an elegant pose to an uncontrollable burst of enthusiasm in an instant. Like the Yorkshire Terrier, Bai Lu has a graceful and almost ethereal appearance, but hides a much livelier personality than you might expect. Her expressive face and tender appearance suggest a creature to be cuddled, but behind that adorable appearance lies an inexhaustible energy, capable of transforming even the most ordinary moments into something surprisingly fun. Her vitality almost seems at odds with her delicate appearance, making her a little bundle of grace and sweetness... at least until she decides to let loose.

Chen Feiyu possesses a feline charm based more on mystery than immediate sympathy. His gaze often seems to hide something: you never know if he's trying to win you over with his charm or simply trying to find your weakness. His signature half-lipped smile seems like the smile of someone who knows something others don't yet know. Like the puma, he is elegant, mysterious, and lethal: he doesn't need to attract attention to dominate the environment.

Be careful, though: in the presence of a ball or any other sufficiently irresistible stimulus, he immediately abandons his role and his stern expression to run off to play.

🔍 Why the Doberman?

Because at first glance, Chen Xingxu appears stern, elegant, and almost intimidating, yet in a casual setting, you'll feel like you're dealing with a genuine puppy. It is precisely this contrast that makes the Doberman his perfect counterpart: on set, he may have a serious and authoritative aura, but as soon as he relaxes, a disarming spontaneity, vivacity, and naturalness emerge. He's the perfect example of how a strong screen presence can coexist with a surprisingly sociable and easygoing personality.

Curious, spontaneous, and incredibly expressive, Ding Yuxi seems incapable of hiding his emotions. Even when he tries to maintain a certain composure, a surprise on set is enough for his face to reveal everything that's going through his mind. His unique facial features seem to have hindered his career: in some interviews, he's said he struggled to get his first jobs partly because of his monkey-type face. An assessment that, in hindsight, seems almost paradoxical: the same expressiveness that might have seemed ill-suited to traditional aesthetic standards has become one of his most recognizable characteristics.

However, he can also be spotted on the sets of historical dramas, acting out a scene with the same pride with which he would run across the steppe. In romantic moments, he meekly approaches his partner, but without completely losing the air of a creature that could turn at any moment and gallop off toward the horizon.

🔍 Why the Stallion?

Merxat exudes pride and freedom. On screen, he has an elegant bearing and an almost epic presence, as if he belonged on the great plains of Central Asia. There's an aura of authority in his eyes that never seems to completely disappear: his gaze can become that of a smitten fiancé, but it always retains a certain intensity, as if beneath the tenderness lies the indomitable nature of a stallion running free in the steppe. It's precisely this combination that makes him so compelling: elegant and proud without being distant, capable of conveying strength and authority without losing the naturalness that emerges in the most spontaneous moments.

Xu Zhengxi possesses an extremely scenic beauty. It's not vanity: it's a presence that seems born to be admired, just like that of the peacock, which, when it unfurls its tail, seems aware of being the most spectacular animal in the room. At first glance, he may seem vain, but behind that composure and almost aristocratic appearance lies a man who doesn't take himself too seriously. Just like the peacock, which sometimes trips over its own tail, resulting in an unintentionally comical appearance, Xu Zhengxi also manages to surprise with decidedly less solemn expressions. And this makes him even more lovable: elegant and showy without being pompous, refined without sacrificing the ability to laugh at himself.

Because every time you watch him act, what really strikes you is his tender face. Zhou Yiran has a refined and elegant appearance, but his sweetness is always the first thing that catches your eye. Even when he puts on a stern expression or tries to appear tough, his delicate features end up betraying him, revealing the same tenderness that characterizes him in his most spontaneous moments. This doesn't mean he's not believable in the most dramatic roles. Because he exudes a luminous and surprisingly reassuring energy. He has a spontaneous elegance and natural sociability reminiscent of dolphins: intelligent, playful, and capable of instantly establishing a bond with those who interact with them. Despite his obvious beauty, Hou Minghao can completely shed his star aura when he makes a silly face or tries to look small and innocent. In those moments, despite his innate charm, he ends up becoming incredibly cute. Because his aura never truly changes. Even when he's laughing, joking, or appears perfectly relaxed, Song Weilong maintains a confident, elegant, and slightly distant presence, as if a part of himself always remains a few steps behind those who observe him. He's not necessarily cold: he can be friendly and even playful with those he's close to, but he rarely gives the impression of wanting to monopolize the attention of those around him. It's precisely this continuity that makes him a wolf: he doesn't need to put on a threatening expression or do anything in particular to be noticed. He just needs to be there. And perhaps this is his most distinctive trait: that air of natural inaccessibility that makes it difficult to know whether he's studying you, ignoring you, or simply letting you do what you want.

Because on the surface, he's the very embodiment of softness. His reassuring, spontaneous smile, the dimples that appear on his cheeks when he laughs, and his generally sweet and charming demeanor bring to mind the classic, lovable bunny, seemingly incapable of causing trouble. But a closer look reveals that beneath that tender exterior lies a decidedly more chaotic creature. He's the kind of bunny who appears perfectly serious and calm when he's probably about to jump somewhere he shouldn't, gnaw on something, or get involved in some absurd situation. In this sense, he's reminiscent of Wang Hedi: both belong to that rare breed of animals who manage to appear adorable while being the epitome of chaos. And perhaps, considering their shared last name, chaos is simply written in their DNA.

🌏 Natural Habitat: the more secluded woods of the Imperial domain, preferably in areas where the vegetation is dense enough to allow him to observe intruders without being seen himself. He favors quiet royal palaces, wood-paneled professional offices, and magical realms where he rules. He can occasionally be spotted in TV parlours, but rarely stays there long enough to become truly sociable.

🔍 Why the Red Fox?

Because he has that elegant, reserved, and slightly elusive air that makes it difficult to understand what's going on in his head. He seems perfectly at ease with his individuality, as if he feels no need to attract attention or seek approval from others. He manages to be intriguing even when he's doing absolutely nothing: just a glance or his extremely measured manner in front of the camera is enough to give the impression he's always in control of the situation. He's a difficult person to read, and precisely for this reason, slightly out of reach. He doesn't necessarily come across as cold, but rather as though there were a gap between him and others that he has no intention of bridging: just like the fox that stays at a certain distance, watching you and deciding how close let you get.

🌏 Natural Habitat: TV parlours, movie sets, backstage, and any place where it's possible to assume the expression of a needy puppy. No environment is hostile enough to prevent his little face from silently begging for forgiveness, care, or simply cuddles.

🔍 Why the Pug?

The physical resemblance is just the starting point. What makes Joseph Zeng a perfect pug is his expressive consistency: whether he's playing a xianxia, ​​a thriller, or the most serious and resolute character possible, sooner or later that puppy gaze with large puppy eyes asking for protection will emerge. It's such a strong characteristic that it often ends up overshadowing the image of the impassive warrior.
